5 Steps

How to Cancel When a Company Won't Let You

Legal steps when the cancel button doesn't work or the company makes cancellation impossible.

1

Document the difficulty

Screenshot every step of your cancellation attempt. Record phone calls (check your state's consent laws). Save chat transcripts. This is evidence.

2

Send a written cancellation demand

Write a formal cancellation letter citing the FTC Click-to-Cancel Rule (16 CFR Part 425). Send via certified mail with return receipt.

3

File a credit card chargeback

If the company charges you after your cancellation request, call your card issuer and request a chargeback. Provide your cancellation documentation.

4

File an FTC complaint

Go to reportfraud.ftc.gov. The FTC enforces the Click-to-Cancel Rule. Include screenshots of the difficult cancellation process.

5

File a state AG complaint

Your state Attorney General handles consumer protection complaints. Many have dedicated units for subscription issues.
