4 Steps

How to File an FTC Complaint About a Subscription

When and how to report subscription companies that violate the Click-to-Cancel Rule.

1

Document the violation

The FTC Click-to-Cancel Rule requires: clear disclosure at signup, easy cancellation (as easy as signing up), and no dark patterns. Screenshot any violations.

2

Go to reportfraud.ftc.gov

Select 'Online Shopping' or 'Subscriptions'. Fill out the form with company details, what happened, and how much you were charged.

3

Attach evidence

Upload screenshots of: the signup flow (if terms weren't clear), the cancellation flow (if made difficult), and any charges after cancellation.

4

Submit and save confirmation

Keep your FTC complaint number. The FTC uses complaint data to identify enforcement targets — enough complaints trigger investigation.

Tips

The FTC doesn't resolve individual complaints but uses them for enforcement priority
Companies that get many FTC complaints become enforcement targets
The FTC has brought cases against major companies like Adobe, Amazon, and Publishers Clearing House
